Tech Lead (Shopify)
JOB DESCRIPTION
Pact is looking for a Tech Lead who will own the technical success of our Shopify projects end to end – from architecture and delivery to the growth of the developers building alongside them. This is a hands-on leadership role: you'll still be writing production code daily, but you'll also be the person the team and the client look to for technical direction, sound judgment, and accountability for the outcome.
The ideal candidate has deep Shopify expertise across themes, Functions, and complex custom features, paired with the leadership instincts to shape a project's technical approach, mentor the project team, and build trust directly with clients. You'll set the standards others follow, de-risk the hardest technical unknowns before the team commits, and make sure the work ships on time, at quality, and in service of the client's goals.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate with entire project teams (Producer, Designer, Developers, and QA Engineers) to deliver excellence for our clients
- Own the technical delivery of entire projects – timeline, quality, and outcome – not just individual features
- Lead solution design and architecture across themes, headless (Hydrogen/React), Functions, and cart/checkout transforms; document key decisions and defend the tradeoffs behind them
- De-risk the hardest technical unknowns early, anticipating edge cases and scaling limits before the team commits to an approach
- Provide feedback on feasibility of design, and deconstruct Figma designs into well-written tickets with technical approach and acceptance criteria.
- Scope and estimate whole projects and milestones, flag technical risk early, and shape realistic delivery plans alongside project management
- Enforce code quality, performance, and accessibility standards across the project, owning quality outcomes at the project level
- Grow the developers on your team through pair programming, structured feedback, stretch opportunities, and a strong code-review culture that teaches as much as it gates
- Anticipate and remove blockers for the whole team, surfacing risk to stakeholders before it becomes a problem
- Own the technical relationship with the client – translating requirements, explaining tradeoffs, pushing back constructively on scope and feasibility, and building trust
- Factor budget, margin, and client goals into technical decisions.
- Demonstrates sound judgement when balancing requirements and feasibility against budget and timeline.
- Stay hands-on, contributing high-quality frontend code daily while balancing leadership responsibilities
REQUIREMENTS
Shopify Experience
- 5+ years of hands-on Shopify development experience, including Themes, Shopify APIs (Admin API, Storefront API), Apps, Functions, Extensions, and Checkout customizations
- Demonstrated experience leading the technical direction of Shopify projects end to end
- Deep familiarity with the Shopify ecosystem including popular apps and integrations such as Klaviyo, Attentive, Yotpo, Gorgias, ReCharge, Nosto, and other commonly used Shopify apps
Technical Skills
- Strong proficiency in Liquid, JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML/CSS/SCSS
- Understanding of all Shopify customization surfaces: Admin API (GraphQL & REST), Storefront API, UI Extensions, Functions, etc.
- Bonus if you’re experienced in Headless architecture, including React and Hydrogen
- Ability to define architecture and set technical standards, including branching/release strategy and QA gates
- Sound judgment on build-vs-buy and app-vs-custom tradeoffs per client
- Familiarity with modern development workflows including build tools, CI/CD, version control, testing, and performance optimization
- Comfortable leveraging AI-assisted development tools to enhance productivity and code quality
Professional Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to lead clients, developers, and project managers through technical decisions
- Proven ability to mentor and grow other developers
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills with the ability to own commitments and outcomes across multiple projects
- Sound judgment to make deliberate speed-vs-quality tradeoffs and own the consequences
- Ability to scope and estimate whole projects, not just assigned work
- Commercial awareness: an understanding that technical decisions carry budget, margin, and timeline implications
